For 31 May 2020, Pentecost, based on John 20:19-23
When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.†After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.†When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.â€

How prophetic your words! When you prepared this homily, you had no clue that this Pentecost would be the hour when the Holy Spirit would arrive in full power, opening the boiling kettle of frustration and wrath and publically witnessing to our endemic racism. It is not just the police of Minneapolis—many, many of us are guilty of making decisions and actions that remain hidden from public view but which stoke the fire under that boiling kettle of injustice. If we want peace we must root out the very many sins of injustice we quietly accept and continue to indulge. Look to it, you judges, lawers, real estate vendors, bankers, teachers, religious leaders and all who make decisions that affect the MAJORITY of us who are POOR!
