While Jesus was speaking, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, ‘Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you!’ But he said, ‘Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it!’

Oh Deb! From the lips of a mother’s! Thanks once again for a fine preaching. Not a word to waste. I hope all’s well ther on Oregon. Fall has begun her riotous dance of colors here and I hope the wind doesn’t blow them away too soon!!

I’ve just found this pericope so perplexing for so long. And as a Catholic, I find it hard to imagine that Jesus would disrespect his mom, especially in public, so a deeper look helped!

I wonder why someone in a crowd would interrupt Jesus to say what this woman did. Perhaps, she just wanted attention or to appear erudite. Jesus took what she said and turned it back on her. Mary is blessed not only because she bore and nursed Jesus, but because she followed him. Good insight, Deb.
