For 18 August 2014, Monday of week 20 of the year, based on Matthew 19:16-22
Someone came to Jesus and said, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?†And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.†He said to him, “Which ones?†And Jesus said, “You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honor your father and mother; also, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.†The young man said to him, “I have kept all these; what do I still lack?†Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.†When the young man heard this word, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

This made me think about the reading in a new way, not so much about giving something up as getting rid of obstacles in our life… Thanks!

I don’t think there is a conscientious Christian alive who doesn’t experience discomfort at Jesus’ words to give up all you have and follow me. This reflection helped me to think about “giving up” as not only the physical act of putting things in boxes and carting them away, but aslo the spiritual practice of detaching oneself from the desire to own things and to control and impress others. I appreciate this gentle reminder that following Jesus does not require perfection, but only the heart to take on the journey.

It is with a heart filled with great Thanksgiving for you Katy that I give praise to God. Excellent reflection on a tough passage. Yes may the sadness and pain of our separation from God move all of us to return to Him. Katy may you continue to preach. We all need to hear the Holy Spirit moving through you.
