Better than Jesus?
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
For 19 May 2020, Tuesday of the 6th week of Eastertide, based on John 16:5-11
Jesus said to his disciples: “But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.”

Dear Scott,
If I did not know you better I would swear you were Irish, even to “And hears the thing!†You are a wonderful preacher, and I loved the Pinochio cartoon. We have a lot to learn from you! I hope you know I would value help from you to improve my preaching! And thanks fro giving us a chance to preach, even in old age!

I’ve replayed and replayed this little homily of yours, Scott. It has been a wonderful preparation for me for Pentecost. I LOVE your reflection on conscience…â€not some unruly desire masquerading….Ah, but there’s the thing…we have to trust God working inside us.â€
In all of our work in parishes, I’d say this trust is the biggest struggle folks have, especially when church authorities keep insisting all we have to do is listen to THEM. In my own life, this trusting my conscience has been very freeing and life giving. I will be grateful for the Spirit in me anew now because of your words. Thank you, thank you!

Thank you all for the very kind comments. It is funny that these homilies done at the last minute (because we had a hole in the schedule) allow one to be more honest, and hence more helpful. And I was worried that people would not get the Pinocchio reference, so it is good that you did.
