For 9 March 2021, Wednesday of the third week of Lent, based on Matthew 5:17-19
Jesus said to his friends, ‘Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfil. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Grateful, Fr. Punch for your reflections on your father teaching you the value of honesty and integrity. Being people of principle is not popular today and I am sure it wasn’t in Jesus’s time either.
I ask myself how do I/we as religious priests and sisters claim this value in our lives when I see so few of us challenge the systems thinking in today’s world. How do we preach justice and peace in a world so complex that few people know what is honest and truthful?
Blessings and peace on your ongoing preaching,

Thanks Fr. Nick. Honesty is the best policy, says the proverb. You sure experienced that in hearing about the honesty of your Dad. There is so much pain caused by dishonesty and corruption world wide. Our motto is VERITAS and as Dominicans we should standup against this especially where the poor are concerned. Thanks. Wishing you peace and blessings.

Your homily captured the innate difficulty in understanding the difference between blanket statements of what is right or wrong like “fighting is wrong” and when it can be just. Principles, the power behind the act makes the difference. The principles of justice, fairness and charity will always guide us in the right direction.
