To Rend Rather than Divide
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
Some in the crowd who heard these words of Jesus said, ‘This is really the prophet.’ Others said, ‘This is the Messiah.’ But some asked, ‘Surely the Messiah does not come from Galilee, does he? Has not the scripture said that the Messiah is descended from David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?’ So there was a division in the crowd because of him. Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.
Then the temple police went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, ‘Why did you not arrest him?’ The police answered, ‘Never has anyone spoken like this!’ Then the Pharisees replied, ‘Surely you have not been deceived too, have you? Has any one of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, which does not know the law—they are accursed.’ Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus before, and who was one of them, asked, ‘Our law does not judge people without first giving them a hearing to find out what they are doing, does it?’ They replied, ‘Surely you are not also from Galilee, are you? Search and you will see that no prophet is to arise from Galilee. Then each of them went home.

Prophets not only tell us if our failings, but also tell us we have more in common. We should look to be like Jesus and gather, not separate. Anen.

Elise,
You were outstanding today! Excellent ideas but poetic images (mold on the wall) insightful, but it also made me laugh, two really good issues.

What a powerful homily! I have been devoted to Ron Rolheiser ever since being introduced to him by Fr Art Kinsela. I am part of a preaching team, Thomas More Center, a Franciscan Sisternand Mike Champlin and I from the St Albert province of the Order. I want to thank you for your passion, so missing in much of our preaching, I have tried to make people aware of the many words Jesus used for the devil, and to use heaven as a goal rather tha the fear of hell!! Thank you!!

Elyse, playing catch up on this Monday morning. How accurately you describe our reality… what affirmation and encouragement you offer to align oneself with a prodigal God of abundance. Because I live with you and witness your journey your words are all the more credible…. am watching for that creeping mold in my life! â¤ï¸Rose
