What’s the story really about?
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
For 16 August 2021, Monday of week 20 in Ordinary Time, based on Matthew 19:16-22
Someone came to Jesus and said, ‘Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?’ And he said to him, ‘Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.’ He said to him, ‘Which ones?’ And Jesus said, ‘You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honour your father and mother; also, You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ The young man said to him, ‘I have kept all these; what do I still lack?’ Jesus said to him, ‘If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’ When the young man heard this word, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

Dear Ruth Anne,
I, too, have been haunted by this passage. It prompted me to take a step into religious life as a Dominican Sister. Yet, even now as a retired Dominican Sister of Peace, I am still challenged by these words of Jesus. Thank you for letting me know that with God’s grace, I can continue to take the next steps to live in love. God bless your preaching!

Dear Sr. Ruth Anne,
I always am blessed by your homilies and today was extraordinary. I often ask myself when I am encountering our clients returning from incarceration, “what is the story†and “what is the real†story? Yes, they ask for basic needs but it is so much more not only for them but for us accompanying then in their reentry. You invited us all into a deeper dive with the young man’s real story and brought up the deeper invitation of what it means to follow Jesus. Thank you.

Not Sr, just plain Ruth Anne! Many thanks to all of you for such a positive response – it’s encouraging to know that our preaching is effective. God bless you all

Inspiring, as usual! Reminded me a bit of our dear Jesuit friend, St. Ignatius of Loyola:
“Give me only your love and your grace…that is enough for me.”
