For 7 May 2023, The Fifth Sunday of Easter, based on Acts 6:1–7
Now during those days, when the disciples were increasing in number, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution of food. And the twelve called together the whole community of the disciples and said, ‘It is not right that we should neglect the word of God in order to wait at tables. Therefore, friends, select from among yourselves seven men of good standing, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this task, while we, for our part, will devote ourselves to prayer and to serving the word.’ What they said pleased the whole community, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, together with Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. They had these men stand before the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.
The word of God continued to spread; the number of the disciples increased greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.

Jerry, thank you for your uplifting message today, as many continue to be disheartened, even as the synod on synodality looms. I so appreciate the Word. We can always count on solid historical theology and homiletics from our OP brothers and sisters. I am most appreciative of the frequency of sister’s ( in the broadest sense) contributors. That gives me hope. As I read Acts 6 it seems to say: “we can get more men to do the service jobs, while we maintain our position as liturgical ministers.” The organizers were men, the choices for deacons were men–here I only read expansion of clericalism. I don’t see much reform there–and also have little hope for changes in that arena from the synodality synod. Nonetheless, I am very pleased that 70 women will have voice and vote in the synod. I pray that some men will organize and walk with us until much needed reforms occur in our governance by men. Baby steps for 50 years doesn’t really cut it for 1/2 the Church. I count on men like you to walk with us and carry the message to your (our) itinerant preacher leadership in the Vatican and in Rome, at Santa Sabina–just a peep-hole away from Saint Peter’s. Thank you for your reflection.

Jerry, thanks for plugging the Synod.
I actually believe there may have been women in that service group reported in Acts, but in the editing of the story their names were omitted.
Always good to hear your preaching!
