Are You My People?
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
For 30 July 2024, Tuesday of week 17 in Ordinary Time, based on Jeremiah 14:17-22
You shall say to them this word:
Let my eyes run down with tears night and day,
and let them not cease,
for the virgin daughter—my people—is struck down with a crushing blow,
with a very grievous wound.
If I go out into the field,
look—those killed by the sword!
And if I enter the city,
look—those sick with famine!
For both prophet and priest ply their trade throughout the land,
and have no knowledge.
Have you completely rejected Judah?
Does your heart loathe Zion?
Why have you struck us down
so that there is no healing for us?
We look for peace, but find no good;
for a time of healing, but there is terror instead.
We acknowledge our wickedness, O Lord,
the iniquity of our ancestors,
for we have sinned against you.
Do not spurn us, for your name’s sake;
do not dishonour your glorious throne;
remember and do not break your covenant with us.
Can any idols of the nations bring rain?
Or can the heavens give showers?
Is it not you, O Lord our God?
We set our hope on you,
for it is you who do all this.

Belonging to one another, consistently choosing to see each other as “my people “, learning your wound…-surely this is the good seed we are to sow throughout the world. Thank you for this breaking open of the Word. I walk in it today.

Dear Sr. Angela,
So grateful for your challenging and very real questions to ask ourselves today. Are we consistent in sharing God’s love and blessings to all whom we meet in a world and church who is wounded and divided. We pray for Unity to truly become God’s People.
Blessings on your continued preaching of the Word,
Peace,

This was a marvelous preaching, Angela! Excellent questions for us to contemplate. I loved your invitation to everyone as “my people.” The world would be a different place if we did this!
Blessings,

Sister Angela, what a beautiful preaching and so needed, especially in the United States now as we face such political divisions in our country. We need to reflect on the voices that we listen to as we face choices for our presidential election. Whose voice , what voice calls us to live out what God calls us to —the love of all people. Our world is so full of violence, distrust , and discrimination against groups of people. Yet , there is also hope and love throughout the world lived out in the lives of so many people. We need to remember that we are one people , as you encourage in your preaching and questions .We are the people of God and our similarities are more common than our differences,. Let us live out of your preaching day by day as we accept those who are different from us or who have different ideas, remembering that we are one people, the people of God. God walks with each person on earth and we are brothers and sisters to one another . God bless you for your reflection.
