The Greater Rule of Conscience

For 14 August 2024, The Memorial of Saint Maximilian Kolbe, Priest, Martyr, based on Matthew 18:15-20
Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax-collector. Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.’

I appreciate your topical passion and love for your friend. I am challenged by the notion that the Catechism is subjective or suggestion. Something I will ponder this day. Thank you.

Dear Barbara,
Grateful for your courageous preaching and saddened by the experience of your friends in our church when we are talking about being inclusive. I believe no one has the right to refuse someone Holy Communion unless it would be a harm to the community of believers. This situation I hope will be corrected and I am glad they had the courage to want to receive Christ in Holy Communion. God is blessing them and I hope and pray they find another community of believers and a pastor who welcomes them to the sacraments. Blessings on your continued preaching of the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Brava, Sister Barbara! This sort of incident recently happened at a church here, and it was so shameful, hurtful and degrading. The priest who publicly refused Communion to this particular individual literally decimated that particular faith community. Thankfully, the bishop removed him, but the parish is struggling to regain its once, vibrant self.

Refusing to give the Eucharist to a Catholic has always puzzled me. It is the Bread of Life. Isn’t it exactly what is needed when someone is struggling with something in their personal life or with the Church.
This preaching on the rule of conscience is what I needed to hear today
