The Heart of the Matter

Wednesday of 5th Week, based on Mark 7:14-23

Then Jesus called the crowd again and said to them, “Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile.”

When he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about the parable. He said to them, “Then do you also fail to understand? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile, since it enters, not the heart but the stomach, and goes out into the sewer?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.) And he said, “It is what comes out of a person that defiles. For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

About Magdalen Coughlin, O.P.

I am a Dominican Nun, a native Canadian and member of the Squamish British Columbia community, a new foundation in Western Canada, We are establishing a monastic community here in the Canadian wilderness. We welcome visitors and retreatants who come to this place, sometimes purposefully, sometimes blindly, in search of silence, rest, healing, and often, for meaning in the chaos of life. It is of course the God of Love who draws them, and it is our privilege to be here for them.

  1. I would like to consider the chance of thanking you for your professional
direction I have constantly enjoyed going to your site.
We are looking forward to the actual commencement of my university research and the overall
preparing would never have been complete without visiting your web blog.
If I might be of any help to others, I’d personally be ready to help by way of what I have gained from here.
