For 4 April 2023, Holy Tuesday, based on Jeremiah 7:23-28
This command I gave them, ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people; and walk only in the way that I command you, so that it may be well with you.’ Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but, in the stubbornness of their evil will, they walked in their own counsels, and looked backwards rather than forwards. From the day that your ancestors came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have persistently sent all my servants the prophets to them, day after day; yet they did not listen to me, or pay attention, but they stiffened their necks. They did worse than their ancestors did.
So you shall speak all these words to them, but they will not listen to you. You shall call to them, but they will not answer you. You shall say to them: This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the Lord their God, and did not accept discipline; truth has perished; it is cut off from their lips.

Deborah,
I won´t quote your homily. I promise! But I´m a Redemptorist priest. I have the Good Friday service and I´m going to quash those……………words. I´m not sure exactly how I´ll do it. I´m thinking of just raising my hands, telling our narrator to stop and invite the people to say..WE WISH WE HAD NOT SAID THOSE WORDS.
I´ll let you all know what happened.

Tom, I would be most interested to hear whether you figure out what to do, what it is, and how it goes. Although I don’t know what others would think, I know that I’d love to be invited into a moment of redemption and a model of a better present and future as a Christian.
Peace,
Deborah

Deborah, you expressed exquisitely the feelings I have always had about being assigned the voice of. “The Crowd” during the readings of the Passion this week. Your reflection and Thomas Deely’s response are rich sources of reflection. Thank you.

Thank you Deborah for sharing your insights into the readings today. However, I do know that most likely I do deny Jesus when I am not the disciple that Jesus calls me to be. I deny him when I succumb to words of violence in my thoughts, words or actions. I deny him when I don’t speak out the Truth or take leaps of faith to do so out of fear. At the same I know that God in Jesus forgives me. In some way I think I do crucify him and yet I know he forgives and has mercy on me a sinner.
Blessings on your preaching,

Thank you for your deep reflection on today’s gospel. In the back of my mind I felt like saying what Peter said, “Even though I should die with you, I shall not deny you” But I know I am a sinner, so I join you as a villain in the crowd. A villain begging for mercy and forgiveness. A villain hoping for deliverance. A villain who awaits for resurrection for a new life in Christ.

What a story! Dear Tom, brave soul, do let us know how you rock that world. We do have opportunities, large and small, to say “we wish we had not said those words”—every time we cuss someone pulling in front of us, kick someone who’s down, spend when we know better to save. We can’t take them back from then, but we can take to heart this poignant reminder to do it now. Blessed Just Tuesday.

Why do you tell me every time that I’m sending a duplicate when I’ve just read or heard it and want to respond to it??
