For 21 January 2025, Memorial of Saint Agnes, Virgin, Martyr, based on Mark 2:23-28
One sabbath Jesus was going through the cornfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, ‘Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?’ And he said to them, ‘Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and he gave some to his companions.’ Then he said to them, ‘The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.’

Thank you for the meaningful reflection- to be a voice for the people who are hurting as we sit comfortably in our warm homes, feeling safe. It saddens me to witness all this unkindness. and to sit in church knowing this is the heart of many of my congregation. Heaven help us all.

Our parish feeds the hungry, clothes those without, petitions to protect life from conception to natural death, visits the incarcerated, teaches the young, encourages and recognizes marriages from banns to diamond anniversaries, respectfully buries the dead. This is off the top of my head, and could be any parish. Let’s not forget what else may be in others’ hearts. God bless.
