For 14 August 2023, The Memorial of Saint Maximilian Kolbe, Priest, Martyr, based on John 15:12-16
Jesus said to his disciples, ‘This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name.

Pinpricks of martyrdom…could they be slivers of the cross? There are times when we say, “God, increase my faith” and we strive again to carry our cross faithfully and then we feel the uncomfortable pressure against our flesh as it transforms us into His image. Hope is warranted, however, because in the homily for August 12, we are reminded if we have a —here I paraphrase- a pinprick of faith—just as much as a mustard seed, God’s will is done and He receives glory. Pinpricks, like leaven, a least of these components that causes great things to happen.

Oh! I just read the reading of Deuteronomy 10 where it is written, “Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and be no longer stiff-necked.” That takes a pin prick up a few degrees doesn’t it…circumcising the heart—OW! I would prefer a pin prick, and God, in His mercy will do as I submit…until indeed my heart is circumcised, pin pricked to glory!—if I only will repent of stiff necked rebellion.
